How CoQ10 Combats Fatigue from Toxic Mold Illness

Toxic mold can wreak havoc on your energy. I struggled with this for years before I discovered a secret weapon to combat fatigue: CoQ10. This article will lay out why toxic mold makes you so tired and how CoQ10 may help you get some pep back in your step!

Why Toxic Mold Causes Fatigue

Deep fatigue is a hallmark of toxic mold illness. I was so incredibly fatigued that I wanted to sleep forever and never wake up. My brain was also fried; I couldn’t hold a thought and had to recall each recent thought at least three times.

These are symptoms of cellular exhaustion. It’s a bone-deep fatigue or a complete brain disability. These issues could also appear during hypothyroidism or some other type of poisoning, but any chronic cause of fatigue causes cellular fatigue.

What I mean by cellular fatigue is that the mechanism for energy production within the cell is hampered. This condition is more formally called mitochondrial disease​​ and you’ve probably never heard of it because it’s not commonly presented online or in a doctor’s office. 

If you’ve got toxic mold illness, your cellular ATP or energy production is being affected by the wandering mycotoxins, able to penetrate your cells, everywhere, and able to penetrate the mitochondria of your cells where energy is produced. (1)

Toxic Mold & CoQ10: What’s the Connection?

CoQ10, also known as Co-enzyme Q10, ubiquinone or ubiquinol, is an antioxidant that your cells produce to counteract the oxidation that occurs when energy is produced. 

Energy is produced in a multi-step process that requires many nutrients. While the body does make CoQ10, its production is reduced with age and in the presence of toxins. (2)

This means that right when you need it - when you are low on energy - you are missing a key component of the process.

Dosage: My recommended dosage is 2 soft gels upon waking, equaling 200 mg. 

Who Can Take CoQ10 (& Who Shouldn’t)

While CoQ10 has amazing benefits, it should only be taken by those 19 years and older. Also, if you have liver or kidney issues, CoQ10 may not be a good fit. High doses of CoQ10 (300 milligrams or more) may affect liver enzyme levels. Make sure to consult with a trusted healthcare professional.

CoQ10 and Other Medications

CoQ10 can interact with blood thinners, making them less effective in some cases. This includes warfarin and even aspirin usage. Make sure to consult with your trusted healthcare professional before supplementing with CoQ10.

Diabetes and hyperglycemia medications: monitor blood sugar levels as your need to medicate may be reduced by CoQ10.

The following medications reduce CoQ10 levels, so supplementation with CoQ10 may be especially helpful: 

  • Statins

  • Beta-blockers

  • Cholesterol medications

  • Tricyclic antidepressants
